Celebrating the life of

Richard Joseph Campbell

July 07, 1969 - February 25, 2025

Richard Joseph Campbell

Richard Joseph Campbell, 55, of Savannah (Wilmington Isl.), passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his friends and dogs on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, leaving behind a lifetime of stories, laughter, and an impressive collection of "Richardisms"—his signature words of wisdom.

Born on July 7, 1969, in Savannah, Richard lived most of his life on Tybee Island. He was a small business owner of Campbell's Construction and Home Repair. He was a communicant of the Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Richard lived life on his own terms, never missing an opportunity to speak his mind, crack an inappropriate joke, or remind everyone that rules were just "suggestions." Whether he was fishing, boating, cooking enough food for the whole neighborhood, or posting inappropriate memes on Facebook, he made an impression everywhere he went.

Richard is survived by his daughters, Brittany Ellsworth and Madison Campbell; granddaughter Marlo Ellsworth; life partner Joy Wainwright; beloved dogs “Sarge” and “Stella”; half-sister Bonnie Campbell; Cousin Emily Kimberling; and many, many lifelong friends who will forever cherish his quick wit, unwavering loyalty, and ability to make any situation just a little more interesting. He was preceded in death by his mother, JoAnn (JoJo) E. Turner; father, Richard G. Campbell; grandmother, Essie (Nana) Bender; grandfather, Joseph J. Bender (Papa); uncle, Jimmy (Bubba) Campbell; and we can only imagine the kind of reunion happening right now.

In lieu of flowers, funerals, or celebrations, raise a glass, tell a joke, or do something spontaneous—no formalities, just laughter, love, and maybe a toast (or two) to a man who truly lived. Because if there’s one thing Richard taught us, it’s that life is meant to be lived to the fullest, filter optional.
